How to Apply Eyeliner: A Simple, Safe Routine for Beginners
A step-by-step routine built from product directions, plus the safety rules the American Academy of Ophthalmology and the FDA publish.
Read the guideTubing mascaras use polymers that form a tube around each lash, as L'Oréal and Clinique describe it. These three earn their place for different reasons.

The best tubing mascara depends on what you want from your lashes. If regular mascara tends to smudge under your eyes by mid-afternoon, tubing is the category worth knowing: a tubing formula uses polymers that form a tube around each lash — that is how L'Oréal and Clinique both describe it on their listings — and both brands say it helps reduce flaking and smudging.
We read the Amazon listings for the tubing mascaras with the deepest rating histories and narrowed them to three: one with a built-in primer, one built for drama, and one built around an eye-safety promise. Every claim below is either a fact from the listing or the brand's own wording, and we tell you which is which.

We looked through Amazon's Beauty department for tubing mascaras, ignored sponsored placements, and opened the listings from established brands with large rating bases. A pick had to be a tubing formula by the listing's own description and be shipped and sold by Amazon.com. We skipped unbranded listings. Our full method is on the how we choose page.
Building a full eye look? Our eyeliner picks pair with any of these mascaras, and our concealer guide covers the under-eye area.

This is the deepest rating base of any tubing mascara we considered — 4.4 stars from more than nineteen thousand ratings — and it is a two-step system: L'Oréal describes a double-sided brush that applies a conditioning primer first, then the tubing mascara.
L'Oréal says the formula wraps each lash in a polymer tube and that it removes with warm water and gentle pressure, no oil-based remover needed. The brand also claims "up to 80 percent longer-looking" lashes; that figure is L'Oréal's, and the listing does not say how it was measured.
Best for: anyone who wants length and a warm-water removal routine, by L'Oréal's description.

L'Oréal and Clinique pitch their tubing mascaras mainly on length. tarte's listing pitches this one as "XL length, XL lift & XL pigment," with a creamy, buildable formula and a 360° comb for a lash-extension effect — so it is the pick here if you want more drama.
tarte lists clinical results of 24-hour longwear and a smudge-proof, flake-free, sweatproof finish, based on a clinical study of 33 subjects. The formula lists shea butter, castor oil, biotin, niacinamide and panthenol among its ingredients.
Best for: bold, fluttery lashes, with wear tarte puts at 24 hours.

Clinique's listing is the most specific of the three about eye safety: it says Lash Power is ophthalmologist tested, safe for sensitive eyes and for contact lens wearers, allergy tested and 100% fragrance free.
Clinique pitches it for natural-looking length rather than drama — the listing describes a lightweight formula with a detailing brush meant to reach even the tiniest lashes, and claims 24-hour staying power through sweat, humidity and tears.
Best for: a natural look from a mascara Clinique says is safe for sensitive eyes and contact lens wearers.

L'Oréal and tarte both sell theirs on easy removal. L'Oréal's listing spells out warm water and gentle pressure; if a listing is vague, check the brand's directions.
L'Oréal and Clinique pitch their tubing mascaras on length. If you want thickness too, look for a listing that promises volume outright, as tarte's does.
Words like ophthalmologist tested are brand claims. They are still useful signals when your eyes are sensitive, but read them as the brand's statement.
A 4.4 from nearly twenty thousand ratings tells you more than the same score from a few hundred. We show both numbers for every pick.
It is a mascara whose formula uses polymers to form a tube around each lash. L'Oréal and Clinique both describe it this way on their Amazon listings, and both say the tubes help the mascara stay put and resist flaking.
L'Oréal's listing for Double Extend says to apply warm water and gentle pressure, with no oil-based remover needed. Other brands may differ, so check the directions for the one you buy.
Clinique says Lash Power is ophthalmologist tested, safe for sensitive eyes and contact lens wearers, and fragrance free. L'Oréal also calls Double Extend suitable for sensitive eyes. Both are brand claims; stop using any eye product that irritates your eyes.
L'Oréal and Clinique pitch theirs on length. tarte's tartelette XL is the exception in this guide: its title promises "Lifted Length & Volume" and its bullets promise XL length, lift and pigment.
