The Best Hair Mask: 3 Picks for Dry, Damaged and Thirsty Hair
A hydrating masque for curly hair, a three-in-one treatment and a weekly mask from Kérastase. Three jobs, three picks.
Read the guideDry shampoo is a second-day shortcut, not a substitute for washing. Here is how to get the most from it, according to the American Academy of Dermatology.
Here is how to use dry shampoo so it actually helps: it buys you time between washes by absorbing oil at the roots. Used well, it makes second-day roots look fresher. Use too much and, the American Academy of Dermatology says, hair can turn dry, stiff or gritty.
The short version, from the AAD: pick a formula for your hair color and type, apply a small amount only where you need it, let it sit, brush it out, and wash normally after one or two uses. Below are the details, the mistakes to avoid, and three well-rated picks.
Dry shampoo works by absorbing oil, which is why roots look and feel fresher after you use it. But according to the American Academy of Dermatology (opens in a new tab), it does not actually clean your hair, and it should not replace regular shampooing.
That is the key to using it well: think of it as a way to stretch the time between washes, not to skip them.
1. Choose a formula for your hair. The AAD suggests picking one made for your hair color and type, whether oily, dry or curly.
2. Start small. Apply a small amount only where you need it, such as oily roots. The AAD warns that too much can leave hair dry, stiff or gritty.
3. Spread and wait. Spread it evenly over your scalp and let it sit for the time the product recommends. Dove's listing, for example, says to separate dry hair into sections, shake the can, spray 8 to 12 inches from the roots in short bursts, and leave it in for a couple of minutes.
4. Brush it through. Brush or comb it out, as the AAD advises.
The AAD recommends washing with regular shampoo and water after one or two uses of dry shampoo. How often you need a full wash also depends on your hair: the AAD says people with straight hair and an oily scalp may want to shampoo every day, while dry, textured, curly or thick hair may need it at least once every 2 to 3 weeks, as needed.
If you style with heat between washes, our curling iron guide compares three irons by barrel size and heat range, and our vitamin C serum picks cover the skincare side of your routine.
Making your own. The AAD advises using store-bought dry shampoo rather than a homemade version; homemade mixes made with cornstarch, cocoa powder or baking soda can clump and clog pores on the scalp.
Skipping the wash. The AAD says dry shampoo should not replace regular shampooing, and recommends a wash with shampoo and water after one or two uses.
Ignoring irritation. If your scalp itches, burns or gets irritated, stop using it. The AAD says to see a dermatologist if symptoms last more than a few weeks.
On October 18, 2022, Unilever voluntarily recalled select lot codes of aerosol dry shampoos produced before October 2021 under its Dove, Nexxus, Suave, TIGI (Rockaholic and Bed Head) and TRESemmé brands, because of the potential presence of benzene; the company identified the propellant as the source, according to the FDA company announcement (opens in a new tab). Not every product from those brands was affected. If you still have an older can from these brands, check the announcement for the affected products and what to do.

We scanned Amazon's Beauty department for dry shampoo, set aside sponsored results, and chose three well-rated listings with a distinct job each: one with clear step-by-step directions, one with a fresh classic scent, and one formulated for dark hair. All three are shipped and sold by Amazon.com. We passed on one popular listing because it had no buy box when we checked, and on another because it was sold by a third party.

Dove's listing has the clearest directions of the three, and they follow the same basic pattern the AAD describes — apply, wait, then brush through: section dry hair, shake, spray 8 to 12 inches from the roots in short bursts, leave it for a couple of minutes, then brush. It has the most ratings of our three, 4.3 stars from more than twelve thousand.
Dove says the weightless formula absorbs excess oil and helps bring lifeless hair back to a bouncy, full-bodied style, and that it brushes out easily with a light, clean scent.
Best for: hair that feels flat and needs lift, by Dove's description.

Batiste's listing describes a waterless formula that targets excess oil and grease at the roots to leave hair feeling clean between washes, and says it adds texture and volume. This three-pack holds 4.7 stars from 851 ratings — a high score on a smaller base than our other picks.
Batiste says it works for several hair types. The Original scent is described as orange and bergamot with hints of rose, lily, lavender and powdery musk.
Best for: a classic refresh between washes, with a fresh scent.

Following the AAD's advice to match your dry shampoo to your hair color, this one is formulated to maintain the richness of dark tones, according to Moroccanoil. It has 4.5 stars from more than ten thousand ratings.
Moroccanoil says it "instantly refreshes and cleanses" (the AAD notes dry shampoo absorbs oil rather than truly cleaning) and removes up to 85% of oil from hair, though the listing does not show the basis for that figure. It has the brand's signature scent.
Best for: dark hair tones, by Moroccanoil's description.
